The Azores are a dream for nature-loving pet parents, and you and your furry furiend are in for an amazing week exploring São Miguel Island. From scenic drives and hikes to dog-friendly dining, there’s plenty for you both to enjoy!
Day 1: Scenic Miradouros
After picking up our rental from SIXT Car Rental. We chose this rental company because they permitted dogs in the rental provided they were returned clean and had the largest number of automatic cars available. We started our adventure by visiting Mata Jardim José do Canto, a tranquil garden perfect for a morning stroll. Peru loved dipping his paws in the lake and walking along the black sand.
Next, we drove toward Miradouro do Salto da Farinha, where you'll get panoramic views of the island's coastal cliffs and waterfalls.
We continued our drive along to Miradouro Despe-te Que Suas, a scenic lookout with dramatic landscapes, before wrapping up the day at Miradouro da Ponta da Madrugada for a peaceful sunset. With your dog by your side, this is the perfect way to take in the calm beauty of São Miguel.
Day 2: Sete Cidades and Sunset Views
The next day, we headed to the famous Miradouro da Vista do Rei, which overlooks the stunning twin lakes of Sete Cidades—one blue, one green. Your pup will love the wide-open space, and you’ll be amazed by the views. Stop at Miradouro das Pedras Negras along the way for more volcanic landscapes. As the day draws to an end, make your way to Miradouro do Pôr-do-Sol for one of the best sunsets on the island.
Day 3: Wine Tasting and Ponta Delgada
No visit to the Azores is complete without sampling some local wine. We spent the afternoon at Quinta Da Jardinete Winery, where you can relax with a glass of Azorean wine while your dog enjoys the outdoor spaces. They host tastings from 3-6pm Monday through Friday. There are two dogs on property, so they may need some time to secure them for your tasting but if you can be flexible its worth it watching your pup frolick through the vineyards.
Be sure to stop by Paulo Teixeira, one of the best wine shops on the island, before heading into Ponta Delgada for a walk around the historic city center. The owner has two adorable pugs and an amazing understanding of local and regional wines.
In Ponta Delgada, make sure to visit PORTUGAL NICE THINGS, a dog-friendly shop filled with local artisan crafts. You’ll find easy underground parking nearby at Parque Motas but be sure to have Euros in cash to pay. Stroll through the Portas da Cidade and explore the cobbled streets with your pup by your side.
Day 4-6: Dog-Friendly Dining and Exploration
We really loved the food at our hotel the DoubleTree Hilton Lagoa but we did make it out to a couple of dog furiendly dinners.
MÔMÔ by Sensi is a dog-friendly gem, offering fine dining delicious dishes made from local ingredients. Be sure to try the onion cappuccino, it’s surprising and divine. They have two golden retrievers on the property, so be sure to email them in advance if bringing your pup.
Or, for something more casual, head to NONNAS TEETH & TOMATOES PIZZA and grab one of their outside tables for one of the best pizzas this New Yorker has had outside of NYC with your furry companion.
When you’re not dining, explore more of São Miguel’s hidden gems or take leisurely walks around Ponta Delgada’s parks and nearby beaches. Your dog will love the variety of new sights, smells, and experiences.
From dog-friendly car rides to scenic walks, wine tastings, and delicious local restaurants, the Azores offer an adventure that both you and your furry companion will cherish.
